a-ha

I started listening to their songs in 1986, their Scoundrel Days album and was instantly mesmerized by Morten Harket’s high-pitched voice. I can’t say which particular songs really fascinate me because all of their songs really stick in my mind and most of them are characterized with heavy synthesizer. The three agreed to use “a-ha” as the band’s name because the interjection is normally used when we find out/discover something great. I love their “Take On Me” (who doesn’t?) it’s the 2D animation that I find interesting for a clip produced as early as 1980s. It was one of the memorable songs of the 1980s.Their decision to hire animation geniuses Mike Patterson and Candice Reckinger as well as director Steve Barron was simply perfect in time. I also love their Manhattan Skyline (released and re-sung by Kings of Convenience) and ultimately “You Are the One”, a song used to endorse Gatsby Hair-Styling Gel (I wish you knew how fans in Indonesia, including myself really helped boost the product marketing). Their “Velvet”, though displays more maturity, still holds the magic I used to feel a long time ago. In short, a-ha resembles the sort of musics you heard ever since 1980s up to now and they’re one of the best. Too bad they disappeared after “Stay On These Roads” album. A-ha became a lot more famous worldwide when they agreed to write a song for Ian Fleming’s 007 - The Living Daylight staring Timothy Dalton as James Bond

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS

Bob Marley & The Wailers’ music seems timeless. Through his powerful musics from the Third World of Jamaica, Marley conveys social messages like freedom, politics repressions, welfare and the most important one, love that are beautifully wrapped in his universal approaches in the forms of songs such as “Could You Be Loved”, “One Love” and also “Is This Love”. Marley also spoke of freedom and opposed racism through his famous “Redemption Song”, “Get Up, Stand Up” as well as “Buffalo Soldiers”.
The legacy of this Rastafari movements has made his music famous and given people not only in Jamaica, but also New Mexico and the Maoris of New Zealand, in Indonesia and India, and especially in those parts of West Africa, a legacy that lives forever, in the hearts of his fans worldwide.

Up to today, the Marley family keeps spreading love by raising fund to help stop children dying and the most devastating food crisis happening today in East Africa. Bob Marley is indeed a myth, a legend.

STING & DOMINIC MILLER - SHAPE OF MY HEART

I just found out from wiki that Sting named this album as Ten Summoner’s Tales just like a title in Canterbury Tales because his name, Gordon Summer, happened to be one of the characters in Chaucer’s tales. I love all the songs in this album, particularly Fields of Gold, the upbeat Heavy Clouds but No Rain and Seven Days. St. Augustine in Hell, a satirical song about forbidden love and personal weakness is also cool. Shape of My Heart, the OST for Leon The Professional is also great, it features emotional relationship. It’s just too bad I missed his concert in Jakarta back then. I have missed the biggest opportunity to meet my favorite musician. What a dork!
