AMERICAN SPLENDOR
Once again Hollywood presents a film adapted from a comic book, only this time, the character was not a superhero, but it is in the form of Harvey Pekar, an author of ‘American Splendor’ and ‘Our Cancer Year’, the latter based on his personal experience when he escaped from testicular cancer. Pekar is just an ordinary guy who tries hard to make his life meaningful, for himself, and also for the people around him, and this, what made him heroic. The film is also unique because it contains many cool animation of Pekar’s figures created by Robert Crumb, an underground artist who is a friend of Pekar himself. I am astonished at how well this biopic visualized. It’s still fascinating after all these years.
